The Development of a Parent Counseling Training Program for Play Therapy Trainees

Abstract
This study set out to develop, apply, and evaluate a parent counseling training program for play therapy trainees. The contents of the training covered the following areas; ¡°the formation of positive relationships with parents¡± and ¡°provision of information.¡± We utilized a simulation training model, which was comprised of ¡°discussion-fictional situation- demonstration of parent counseling role-feedback-demonstration of re-role-debriefing.¡± In terms of the evaluation of the program, the content of parent counseling that the play therapy trainees conducted at the beginning, middle sequence and at the end of the program was analyzed by means of discourse analysis, with a satisfaction survey also included for further comparisons and analysis. The findings can be summarized as follows: the training methods for parent counseling used in this study proved helpful both in terms of clinical performance and the practical application of the theoretical knowledge of the trainees. In addition, the composition of the training tools provided were found to be appropriate to the tasks at hand.
